Hi There!

Welcome to Sailing The Far Side! This is Sascha and Nathalie and we will be traveling through the Eastern Caribbean and beyond documenting life, helping each other and others understand the world we live in!

Look Up

Look Up

Walking around my school campus, it’s hard to imagine that people even talk to eachother these days. Going into an elevator the process is, hit floor button, take out phone, avoid conversation by pretending to talk to people. I mean I have seen it in action, people look down at their devices and open every app possible, open text messages they have already read, go through Snapchat stories, and even play games. Mind you these elevator rides are not that long and people still cannot survive it without technology.

Granted I am currently on an electronic device writing this post, it is not because of anti social means.

It’s pretty sad because, being a huge talker myself, not being able to connect with someone in a small space for approximately 2 min or less, is pretty difficult. It is definitely more uncomfortable for all of us to avoid saying something, then it would be to just say hello.

This problem doesn’t stop at awkward elevator rides but also walking in the street, sitting in class, subways and bus rides, or even sitting at dinner. Though the worst one is when hanging out with friends. I mean if you are sitting at dinner with your phone out scrolling instead of having an intimate conversation, maybe you should not have gone to dinner in the first place. The first thing people do if they are uncomfortable is take out the one thing they know that keep them occupied. Then when one person pulls a phone out, it’s just a matter of time before everyone else does the same. call it the domino effect if you will.

However this isn’t just in social settings, it’s also at times when people should just enjoy themselves (I can say this because I am a culprit of this) . At concerts or music festivals when people should be enjoying the music, feeling the energy and the vibes, all they can worry about is how the pictures will turn out and when they will be able to take the best video. Being a picture and video lover, I can’t help the fact that when I see a good shot or frame I pull out my phone or camera to take it.

We live in the age of technology, where every day something new and improved comes out and we just need to know what it is or buy it for ourselves. Whether this is the new iPhone or Samsung or android, it’s a need that most people can never satisfy. The competition to always be the best, have the best and know the best will never stop, just as the population grows, so will our technological need.

One thing people need to remember, is that sometimes when you don’t look up you miss out on life, on interactions you will never experience looking down at your phone. Conversations that could determine your future, or who you meet, will  never occur, so just Look Up. Once in a while Look Up.
